The Good Little Company Approaches Fundraising Milestone

09/08/2017

The Good Little Company, a sausage brand sold in Waitrose, Tesco NI and Sainsbury’s NI, will soon have raised £500,000 for two charities in Kenya and Malawi.

The Good Little Company has been donating more than half its profits to a nomadic school and a mission hospital in Africa since 2011.

Around 20% of the money raised goes to a mobile school in Kenya for the Samburu people to make sure their children continue to be educated when the community moves on.

The remainder pays to feed and educate orphans at schools run by the Mulanje Mission Hospital in Malawi.

More recently, the fund has also paid £70,000 towards a project that sprays a long-lasting insecticide into homes to fight malaria.

John Heaslip, a volunteer who works with the sausage producer and the two projects, said: “The success of the spraying has been astonishing.”

The spray has slow-release properties to protect homes for up to six months.

Made in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, by artisan producer Finnebrogue, the majority of Good Little Sausages are sold in Waitrose.

Denis Lynn, Finnebrogue founder and chairman, said: “We are about to reach an amazing £500,000 donated by The Good Little Company for two great projects in Africa. But we realise that this wouldn’t have happened without the support of our loyal customers, who clearly love our sausages.

“Every time I travel out to Malawi I am humbled by the hard work and dedication of all the staff and volunteers on the ground. Seeing is believing; they are extraordinary people who make an incredible impact,” added Denis.

Good Little Company Sausages are available in Waitrose stores across the UK. In Northern Ireland they are available in Tesco NI and Sainsburys.

Finnebrogue outlines progress to plastic management so far

Plastic is a serious business and Finnebrogue Artisan is a responsible business. Here, the company outline it's progress to date on managing plastic within operations and food packaging: In 2019,  Finnebrogue moved away from unrecyclable black plastic trays to 100% recycled and recyclable alternatives. In 2021,  the company committed to two targets by 2025: 100% of packaging will be reusable, recyclable or compostable; and they'll have 50% average recycled content across all plastic packaging. Engagement with suppliers is ongoing - to help manage and reduce plastic coming into the factories. Jan - September 2022: Finnebrogue engaged Responsible Plastic Management Group to support their journey. The business recycled 20 tonnes of plastic, mainly from the tubs, lids and wrapping received from suppliers. This plastic was cleaned, shredded and granulated before being turned back into raw material for moulding. The business has introduced recycling bins across all departments in all four sites, which helps them to retain their zero to landfill success. Sourcing a recyclable film for trays (that's fit for purpose) remains a key focus for the food industry - and the business continues to engage with its suppliers to achieve this. Did you know plastic recycling facilities are located at high street supermarkets : Soft plastics: Asda, Co-op, Morrisons, Tesco Flexible plastics: Sainsburys, Waitrose
